The firm is an award-winning elevator design firm for many historic and modern buildings. These award-winning projects include the McGraw Hill Construction Awards for Best Project of the Year Overall and Adaptive Reuse Project of the Year for the renovation of the VA Old State Library and Supreme Court Building into the Patrick Henry Building, which now houses the governor’s office and other state agencies; The GRACRE Project of the Year Award and Style Magazine’s Project of the Decade for Thomas Jefferson’s Virginia State Capitol Renovation and Expansion for one of the most historic structures in America; the RIBA International Award for Architecture for the new wing of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts; The firm participated on the design team for the sixteen-story Williams Mullen Center which was winner of the ACEC Virginia Honor Award for Engineering Excellence and the Greater Richmond Association for Commercial Real Estate (GRACRE) Honor Award for Best Project of the Year. The firm oversaw completion of their design for Virginia’s first Fire Service Access Elevators at the high-rise Muse Hall at Radford University. James Lawrence & Associates LLC has been able to adapt new elevator technology to both new and existing buildings at USN’s Norfolk, Portsmouth, Groton Sub Base and Naples, Italy elevator/escalator projects and NASA’s Langley elevator projects Jim Lawrence graduated from Virginia Tech and spent 15 years working up to 9 years as a senior manager for Otis Elevator. During this time he also served as vice president of BOMA International’s Carolinas and Virginias Chapter and was NEII’s Virginia Representative. He founded James Lawrence & Associates in 1987. He is currently Principal and Senior Elevator Consultant. Jim has been a professional member of ASME and CSI for over 30 years. He has been a past Board Member and officer of NAESA International, chairman of their marketing committee and a past Eastern Region Vice Chair. He is a founding member and past president of the International Association of Elevator Consultants and Chairman of the Elevator Committee representing the Commonwealth of Virginia on the NCPCCI Committee that writes the elevator inspector certification tests for 8 states. Jim has also served on the Technical Review Committee for the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development’s Division of Building & Fire Regulation. Jim holds CSI’s Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA) certification whose recipients demonstrate the ability to develop, administer, and enforce construction contract documents. CCCAs understand QA/QC; bidding/procurement and negotiation; site observations and inspection; construction documents; submittals, substitutions, payment requests, change proposals, and RFIs; Division 01, General and Supplemental Conditions, agreements, and other documents related to project execution and liability. Serving both private and public sectors, the firm uses detailed studies of present conditions, determines owner needs and applies vertical transportation custom designs where required to achieve results often not available from an “off the shelf” product planning guide. The firm is known for high quality inspections, writing clear specifications, and providing contract administration services that achieve the desired elevator products at a reasonable cost. |
